TAPLEJUNG, JUN 11 - According to latest update the death toll from various landslides occurred in different villages in the western part of the Taplejung district has reached 42. Fresh monsoon rains triggered numerous landslides in Taplejung which also severely injured 8 people and washed away much of Liwang, Thokling, Thinglabu and Lingket VDCs.

Of the deceased, only five including Chameli Limbu and Manamaya Limbu of Lingtepa, Devendra Liwang of Liwang, Sabin Maden and Basant BK of Khokling have been identified as of now, according to local police, Taplejung.

Nearly 3 dozen household in the district have been reported to be washed away by the slipping mud and the rescue efforts are hampered by constant rain, high water level in the rivers and bad weather. Locals with the help of police are involved in the rescue work while risk of further slips remain intact on numerous places along the hills as foundations were cracked open and weakened by numerous tremors since the 25th of April 25th.

"This is just the beginning of countless landslides that will follow as monsoon takes up shape," experts say "this is just a beginning; we have been efficient on rescue and relief but disaster preparation was ignored."
